Last week students started working on the first component of our Daily 5 reading program, Read to Self. Students learned what read to self looks like as well as how to be successful readers during this time. Even though our students are beginning readers, they are practicing strategies that make great readers like: reading the pictures, finding familiar words, and telling their own stories. Students began reading three minutes everyday without getting up or stopping reading, which was a difficult but manageable task for this incredible class! This week, we have already increased our read to self time by one minute and introduced writing into our Daily 5 regiment! Our emerging scholars created some awesome illustrations and worked on writing words based on the sounds they hear. Our students worked for three minutes diligently on this task, and will increase their endurance in the coming weeks! We are so proud of all their hard work and are excited to continue adding to their Daily 5 centers.
We also introduced another habit of happy children today! We read "When I Grow Up" by Al Yankovic and discussed "begin with the end in mind" or planning ahead and goal setting. This will be an overarching topic for our week, and our year as we build on the ideas of students dreams!
